Launched in 2013, the NDIS scheme is the first scheme of its kind in Australia. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government funded scheme that delivers support and services to people with disability.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is the federally appointed organisation that manages the administration of all NDIS funding. They are funded by the Department of Social Services (DSS).

To apply to become an NDIS participant you must:
● Be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or a Protected Special Category visa
● Experiencing a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
● Under 65 years of age when you first enter the NDIS.

If you turn 65 after you become an NDIS participant then you have a choice. You can either choose to continue receiving disability supports in the NDIS or you can choose to receive supports through the Commonwealth aged care system.

Goals describe what you want to achieve, develop or learn. A short term goal is something that you want to achieve in 12 months and a long-term goal is achievable in a few years. All the supports that the NDIS funds is directly linked to achieving your goals.

You will receive notification from the NDIS by your preferred mode of communication (usually email or letter) to let you know your new plan is active. It will contain your myplace portal activation code, which expires within 10 days.
About 24 hours after your plan has been approved, it will be available on the NDIS myplace portal. You will usually also receive a printed copy of your plan in the mail.

The NDIS participant portal is called myplace. It is a secure website for participants or their nominee to view their NDIS plan, request payments and manage services with providers.

The NDIS is designed to work in association with the health, education and other universal services. It is a universal insurance scheme that is paid through tax contributions like Medicare.

You will receive a new NDIS Plan after your first NDIS Plan has ended after 12 months. It will have a new set of funding to be used over the next 12 months to achieve your goals.

The Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) is a NDIS support for children with a disability under the age of 7 years.
